Dr. Ken Chong was in Istanbul in late September, visiting Prof. A. Askar, president of Koc University. While in Turkey, Prof. Chong also visited the Hagia Sophia. As an NSF program director of structural systems in the 1990s, he worked with universities to preserve the structure, including installing numerous sensors to monitor its structural health.
