“Deixis,” the annual publication of the Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF), features the work of current fellows and alumni. In the 2025 issue, they spotlight Paulina Rodriguez in the article “Validated: A George Washington University fellow creates ways to apply math to medical devices,” detailing her journey through applied mathematics. Rodriguez shares the story behind her initial interest in applied mathematics that led her to work at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, pursue a Ph.D. at GW Engineering, and conduct graduate research at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico.
Here is an excerpt from the article: “Morrison served as a role model and mentor, encouraging Rodriguez’s ambitions to pursue a mechanical and aerospace engineering Ph.D. at George Washington University. Since 2021, Rodriguez has been expanding the work she did with Morrison on medical-device models at the FDA. At George Washington, she’s advised by Lorena Barba, who has expertise in both the credibility of computational models and understanding the need for computational reproducibility.”
